Storm-Kissed Summer: A Family Afternoon at Bath Lake

This past Monday, we slipped away to Medicine Park, the little cobblestone town tucked between the Wichita Mountains and time itself. With all six of us packed into the SUV—kids buzzing with excitement—we arrived in the early afternoon, just as the sun was high and the breeze warm against our skin.

Floating free in Bath Lake, sunshine on her cheeks, and not a care in the world.

Bath Lake shimmered like glass, fed by mountain springs and bordered by wildflowers and rock. The laughter of children echoed through the air as we waded into the cool, clear water. It was one of those slow summer moments that stretches gently and holds you close.

But as the sky began to shift, so did the mood. Clouds crept in soft and low. Thunder grumbled in the distance. We wandered up the cobbled street to Cobblestone Creamery, where we ordered our favorite scoops and found a window seat just in time.

Caught in the rain, covered in giggles, and sharing the last bite of ice cream—this moment felt like the soft center of our stormy day.

Rain began to dance on the sidewalks. Then came the lightning. Then hail—tiny pearls bouncing off stone. Inside, we laughed, shared bites, and watched the storm wrap the town in a quiet kind of wonder. It felt like the day paused just for us.

Three scoops, one storm, and a front-row seat to nature’s show. Watching the rain fall over Medicine Park from the porch at Cobblestone Creamery. This was right before the hail started.

A Note on Medicine Park’s Charm

Founded in 1908 as Oklahoma’s first planned resort town, Medicine Park has always been a haven for travelers, nature lovers, and dreamers. Its iconic red granite cobblestones give the village a storybook feel, while the nearby Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge offers hiking, bison sightings, and stargazing like no other. Whether you’re here for a dip in Bath Lake or a slow stroll past shops and cafés, this town welcomes you like an old friend.

Sun-drenched and smiling—just before the clouds rolled in. Their joy is the best part of any trip.

We came for the sunshine and stayed for the storm—but we left with something better: a new memory, etched in cobblestone and sky.

Until next time,

From our family to yours,
